As an animal that is intelligent, friendly and agile, the dolphin gave rise to mythical interpretations on the part of many sea-going populations. For the Minoan-Mycenaean civilisation in Crete, as for the Ancient Greeks and Romans, the dolphin was divine.
In Greece, it was sacred above all to Apollo, the god of light, but also to Dionysus, Aphrodite and Poseidon.
It was also considered the guide to menís souls and was therefore used in Early Christian art as a symbol for Christ the Redeemer.
